EuroMillions: These are some of the National Lottery winners from all over Yorkshire Yorkshire News

Senior Advisor to Camelot Winners at The National Lottery, Andy Carter, said: “This is absolutely incredible news. History was made last night with the largest ever National Lottery prize ever won by a single UK ticket holder, and we are delighted that ‘I have now received a claim’.

Winners Joe and Jess Thwaite are from Gloucester and won on a Lucky Dip ticket, but we wanted to know how Yorkshire has fared over the years since the Lottery started in 1994.

By October 2015, 356 Yorkshiremen had become millionaires and together they had won a billion, and September of the same year marked the 4,000th lottery winner nationwide.

Winners of the Yorkshire National Lottery celebrate at Roundhay Park

Available data, up to 2019, which was the 25th anniversary of the National Lottery, shows that there have been 504 winners of over £1m and 37,777 winners of over £50,000 here in Yorkshire.

Harrogate residents shared a £240,000 lottery prize in 2021.

A group of eight Harrogate neighbors won a cash prize of £30,000 each thanks to their postcode.

The windfall came after HG3 2TZ was announced as a winner with the Town Postcode Lottery on Thursday, January 14.

The Village Postcode Lottery is a subscription lottery that costs £10 per month to play. People play with their chosen zip code and are automatically entered into all draws.

At least 33 per cent of the ticket price goes to a good cause and Town Postcode Lottery players have raised over £750m to date for charities and organisations.

Among the winners were father and son Bill and Martin Barnett, who live on Bramham Drive, Harrogate.

They found out about the win on video calls with People’s Postcode Lottery Ambassador Jeff Brazier.

Bill, 67, who was joined on the call by his wife Marie, was quick to respond when the prize amount was revealed. He said, “Wow! Many thanks. Handsome!”

Leeds-born Alex Best won a whopping £1 million thanks to the National Lottery in 2018.

After paying off his student loan from the University of Bolton, buying a house and buying his first car, Alex set out to pursue his career dreams by using the money to find work in the music industry.

Best took a £10-an-hour job at Flamingo Land theme park, North Yorkshire, to gain experience producing shows, before starting his own business as a sound engineer a year later.

Speaking about his career ambitions, Alex told the National Lottery: “I love going to music festivals and concerts and my degree has helped me realize what I want to do as a career. It’s what I love to do, I look forward to touring with big music stars or working at festivals like Glastonbury.”

Lottery winner Trish Emson de Wath won £1.7m in October 2003, but vowed to keep her feet on the ground: in 2015 she was working as a lunchroom helper at her son Benjamin’s school.

And in 2007, lucky cashier Karen Child from Derbyshire cashed in a prize of £8.4m.

Clowne-based Child, who won millions in the National Lottery in 2007, has formed his own charity called The Child Foundation, which supports children and families who have faced illness or hardship in their lives.

South Yorkshire is home to one of the luckiest cities, Sheffield, in Britain when it comes to hitting the jackpot, with at least 70 new millionaires stepping up since 1994 in Steel City alone.

South Yorkshire’s best-known winners are philanthropic couple Ray and Barbara Wragg, who won £7.6m in 2000 and donated over £5m to friends, family and charities.

They also quit their jobs immediately, Ray’s as a construction company supervisor and Barbara’s as a night shift worker at Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Mr. Wragg recounted what it was like to break the news to his boss the day after his 2000 victory, saying: “When I told him I had won, he said, ‘That reminds me, I need to check my ticket.’ I said ‘don’t bother Dave, I won everything'”.

The pair went on a cruise after the win, which Wragg said they “loved.” At the time they were thinking of buying the town hall house they lived in, but ended up with an even more luxurious property in Steel City.

The couple lived a nice life, but became affectionately known as the ‘Lottery Angels’ as they donated most of their winnings to good causes.

Sadly, Barbara passed away in 2018 at the age of 77; ever since, her husband Ray has been fulfilling his wife’s wishes to live life to the fullest on her earnings.

Sheffield hairdresser Deana Sampson has also swapped her town hall home for a luxury conversion in Baslow after landing £5.4m. She had just £3.60 in her bank accounts when she matched her numbers in 1996. Her first purchase was a new pair of trainers.

In March 2018, a syndicate of 19 Sheffield couriers scooped a £228,000 EuroMillions jackpot, each pocketing…

A department store at Home Bargains could fetch more bang for your buck than one of the UK’s biggest supermarkets UK News

For many people, Home Bargains is a place you would go for toiletries or cleaning supplies – or at least it was.

The budget retailer has transformed in recent times and is seeing more and more people shop there due to the rising cost of living. In addition to the toiletries and cleaning supplies already mentioned, you can pick up tons of canned goods and non-perishables, but if you’ve been there recently, you’ll have seen the large fridges and freezers stocked with fruits and vegetables. – there is even a bakery in the Byker store.

If you’ve never had a great home business, you might not know what good deals are out there. But a journalist from the Manchester Evening News decided to make a big shop there – and it looks like she’s making a permanent change thanks to the ridiculously low prices.

A 1.2kg bag of apples costs just £1, a 250g punnet of strawberries the same and a 2kg bag of white potatoes costs just 69p. This could be why Asda recently launched a price match with the retailer, a sure sign that it recognizes the competition.

Two dozen products purchased from Home Bargains were cheaper than Asda prices – and some by far. A 900g packet of McCain Crispy Fries costs £1.69 at Home Bargains, compared to £2.50 at Asda – a saving of 81p.

A 1kg bag of Laila Basmati rice was 51p cheaper than Asda’s £2 at £1.49 and a Mr Kipling Battenberg cake was almost half the price at 99p from £1.95. Even the two deals for £3.50 at Asda wouldn’t make them cheaper than the Home Bargains price.

These are not the only items for which Asda’s multiple purchases and “roll back” promotions have proven to be more expensive. Home Bargains has its own deals and bulk buys, such as two 888ml non-organic Fairy laundry gel packs for £7.49. Individually they cost £4.50 at Asda, up from £1.51 for the pair.

Other cheaper products at Home Bargains were a 200g three-pack of Heinz beans, £1.39 vs £1.50 at Asda; HP Classic BBQ Sauce 465g was £1.49 vs £2.29; Soreen lunchbox breads were 99p from £1.50 and a 500ml pack of eight Highland Spring sparkling waters was £2.19 from £2.70.

Of course, Asda still offers several products that are cheaper than its competitors, with its Smart Price range helping to reduce the cost of many basic products. This offers 500g of spaghetti for just 23p compared to 65p at Home Bargains, and 1/5kg sacks of flour cost 55p, compared to £1 at Home Bargains.

A Home Bargains spokesperson said: “We know that many people, including our loyal customers, are struggling with the current cost of living. We are doing everything we can to keep prices as low as possible, including including absorbing price increases where we can.

2022 BMW X3 M UK review Car News

What is that?

It’s a small detail, but I love how the M-style mirrors on this BMW X3 M set it apart from its regulation siblings. This means that even before you hit the big red start button, you know you’re in the heat.

And here we are, with a first UK drive of the hottest and smallest BMW M SUV (and yes, sorry, the pictures are of a left hooker – we’ve definitely driven the car in the UK ). It’s been refreshed and improved recently, with an updated look, 37 more lb-ft of useful torque and additional equipment.

The added grunt from the 3.0-litre petrol inline-six means the 0-62mph sprint time drops by 0.3 seconds, so marketers can claim main acceleration is over in less 4.0 seconds. That’s not bad for a family SUV, and that means it now matches the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S.

There is technical integrity here. The X3 has the same forged crankshaft as the BMW M3 and BMW M4, which has lower rotating mass, meaning the engine should spin more freely. Additional cooling is taken care of in this facelifted model through an additional engine oil cooler and a separate radiator for the transmission.

The visual changes to the exterior result in larger kidney grilles (as expected), but the most striking aspect is the new “vertically arranged and elongated side air intakes”. I wouldn’t say they’re a nice addition, but they definitely increase aggression. Even without the standard sports exhaust (a very raspy little number, by the way), people are going to notice you.

Inside, Android Auto now runs the X3’s operating system and carbon fiber trim is standard. Anything that reduces the amount of exposed piano black plastic can only be a bonus.

One thing: you’ll know if you’re in the facelifted X3 M by the location of the start button. Next to the gear lever? This will be the last version.

How does it look?

The two M buttons stay on the steering wheel, so you can configure everything from throttle response and steering weight to suspension and stability control, with three settings each. It’s a good job there are the configurable M switches, otherwise the vast majority of every trip would be spent setting up the car.

Like the previous version, the X3 M is still an incredibly fast machine. I can’t say I noticed the faster 0-62mph time, but it’s responsive and focused in every way you’d want it to be.

Jamie Oliver recoups £2.4m after restaurant empire collapses Business

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has recouped £2.4million from the collapse of his Italian restaurant empire, company documents reveal, as chain suppliers are forced to swallow tens of millions of loss books.

Documents released by Interpath at the end of the administrative process show Mr Oliver’s holding company received an additional payment of £580,000 between last November and this month. This brings the total that has been paid to Jamie Oliver Holdings, a company majority owned by Mr Oliver, to £2.4million.

Interpath said it was a “significant shortfall” on the amount owed to Mr Oliver, who spent £25million trying to save the Italian chain in 2019.

However, the chain’s suppliers bore the brunt of the losses. Jamie’s Italian owed around £85m when he went bankrupt, including £21m in debt to a group of creditors including UK food producers and councils.

Unlike these other companies, Jamie Oliver Holdings was classified as a secured creditor and was therefore guaranteed to receive a portion of the debts owed to it.

Unsecured creditors, which include suppliers and advisers, received just £520,000 of the £21million owed to them.

One of its suppliers, Direct Meats, has previously described feeling “extremely disappointed with the companies falling into administration”. Filings last July, before Interpath asked creditors to submit their claims, suggested that at least one food supplier owed almost £800,000.

Jamie Oliver Group declined to comment.

The collapse of Jamie’s Italian came amid a downturn in the casual dining sector, with other companies such as Gaucho, Byron and Gourmet Burger Kitchen struggling.

Jamie Oliver’s Italian chain has been through a painful restructuring during which it got rid of unprofitable sites, in a bid to stay afloat. However, when it sank almost 1,000 jobs were lost, with the closure of 22 of its 25 UK restaurants described by Mr Oliver as ‘the hardest thing I have ever had to do’.

Mr Oliver said at the time: “I am deeply saddened by this outcome and would like to thank all the staff and our suppliers who have put their heart and soul into this business for over a decade. I appreciate how difficult it is for everyone affected.”

The three remaining UK restaurants – at Gatwick Airport – were bought by SSP out of administration.

Mr Oliver has since suggested he may seek to revive his UK restaurant empire, telling the Radio Times last year: “I’m watching for now but will definitely be back in the game.”

The news that the administrative process for Jamie’s Italian is now complete comes weeks after Mr Oliver found himself at the center of a cost of living dispute. He claimed the government was using the current squeeze on household incomes as an “excuse” to delay tackling obesity.

Earlier this month, Mr Oliver staged a protest outside Downing Street in which he denounced the government’s decision to end a ban on ‘buy one, get one free’ offers ( BOGOF) for junk food.

Boris Johnson said of the move: ‘If people can save on their food bills with certain deals, I think we just need to be flexible as we continue to tackle obesity.

Mr Oliver argued that the BOGOF deals were not helping household budgets. “This particular mechanism causes people to spend more of their income and waste more,” Oliver said. “Using the cost of living as an excuse is wrong, it’s completely unfair.”

Critics have argued, however, that many people rely on the deals for food, with Kantar figures showing more than a fifth of Britons are struggling to make ends meet. Some items have increased by more than 20% in price.

2022 BMW iX M60 review Car News

What is that?

It’s just possible that the arrival of this new M60 derivative means that a murine aesthetic isn’t the most shocking thing about the BMW iX anymore.

You can decide for yourself. On the one hand, well, look at it. On the other hand, know that in M60 form, the dual-motor powertrain produces a combined output of 611 hp and 749 lb-ft. Monstrous numbers all at once, and enough to propel this 2,584kg electric SUV to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds, making it not only the most powerful electric BMW to date but also the most accelerating. The next best i4 M50 sedan is all 0.1 seconds slower, despite, interestingly, having 7 hp per tonne more to its name and less drag.

The flagship iX will cost just under £117,000 when it goes on sale next month, making it £10,000 more expensive than the 516bhp xDrive50 M Sport version that we’re already quite fond of. The difference isn’t exactly a small change, although the M60 comes with a good degree of extra kit as standard and the power boost isn’t just the result of two or three extra lines of code.

The M60 introduces an improved 355hp rear motor – one whose rotor is 2cm longer than that of the motor used by the xDrive50, which has additional cooling and which uses a six-phase inverter, rather than a three-phase. The word is that it fits perfectly in the i4.

In the M60 the rear anti-roll bar is also beefed up, damping rates are a fifth higher and the air springs and steering have received tweaks for a bit more precision and control, if you ever have any. need.

Superficial changes are less significant. There are bronze-effect details and 21-inch M60-specific alloy wheels wrapped in 255-section Pirelli rubber that put the power to the ground. M logos are dotted around the interior, but almost apologetically, and the modular seats are the same as you’ll find in the xDrive50.

Clearly, the M60 isn’t designed as a Lamborghini Urus killer street fighter, but as a super-fast extension of the current iX lineup.

How does it look?

That’s how it goes on the road. In the default drive mode, the M60 makes easy-to-restore progress, like its smaller range mates. The steering is still too filtered, but the gearing feels natural, as does the pedal response and visibility in the spacious cabin is very good.

You’d never know that slightly more torque than that developed even by the Pagani Huayra’s twin-turbocharged Mercedes-AMG V12 is just milliseconds away at any given time.

As this is an M-lite model, the engine efforts are accompanied by a soundtrack designed by Hans Zimmer. But beyond the smooth and surprisingly convincing harshness that seeps into the cabin when you lightly press the accelerator, the vibe is still more luxury limo than performance SUV.

You can let the M60 rip, of course, and for more dramatic effect in Sport drive mode, when Zimmer bares its teeth and throttle response is ramped up to levels even an S54 straight-six couldn’t. hope to match.

The National Lottery could be suspended for the first time in gaming history Business

A legal battle could bring the National Lottery to a halt for the first time in 30 years, robbing good causes and players of millions of pounds, the regulator has warned.

In court submissions seen by The Telegraph, the Gambling Commission said a legal challenge by Camelot against the loss of its lottery license could delay the handover to rival Allwyn on February 1, 2024.

In evidence before the High Court, John Tanner, the Commission’s executive director, warned that this could lead to Czech operator Allwyn having insufficient ‘implementation’ time, leading to a ‘real risk that there there is a period when the National Lottery does not work at all.

The Commission is seeking to overturn a court decision to suspend the transfer process pending the outcome of Camelot’s legal challenge after Allwyn was named the preferred candidate for the fourth license in March.

Camelot, the lottery operator since its inception in 1994, claimed the Commission had made its decision “seriously wrong” and, in its court findings, warned that it would effectively bankrupt the company and prevent it from bidding on other contracts internationally.

However, the Commission warned that Allwyn needed at least 19 months to prepare and complete the complex process of taking over the lottery operation, the first transfer from one company to another in its 30-year history. This would require it to start in June or July at the latest.

In his remarks, Mr Tanner said that as long as the Commission was prevented from reaching an ‘enabling agreement’ with Allwyn to start the ‘unprecedented and untested’ transfer process, there was a serious risk of disruption to the lottery .

He said: “While the Commission is not authorized to enter into the Enabling Agreement with Allwyn, the Commission and Allwyn will suffer material prejudice by being unable to commence significant steps towards the start of the fourth licence.

“This will almost certainly mean that at a minimum the National Lottery will not be operating to its full potential at the start of the fourth license term.

“Furthermore, there is a real risk in these circumstances that there will be, after the end of the third licence, a period when the National Lottery does not operate at all.”

He said the delays could jeopardize prize money and players’ money for good causes. Mr Tanner said: ‘There would be no contributions to good causes during any period when the National Lottery was not operating.

“The interests of participants would be adversely affected to the extent that winners of National Lottery games under the Third License [held by Camelot] may not be able, after the expiration of this license, to claim prizes.

A typical draw features 500,000 to 1.5 million prizes that can be claimed up to six months later. Camelot and Allwyn will need to agree on a process to honor “millions of outstanding prizes” and have earmarked funds to ensure no one loses, according to the Commission.

Even if there was a delay in the signing of the enabling agreement but no break in the operation of the lottery, the Commission warned that there could still be £1 billion less for good causes due to a shortfall in the beginning, compounded by a loss of interest on the money.

In its application, Allwyn proposed an implementation period of 22 months, including a three-month emergency period. The Commission warned that June 30, 2022 would be less than the minimum 19 months needed.

Mr Tanner said: “If the Commission is unable to complete the Enabling Agreement, it is almost inevitable that material and irreversible harm will be done to the National Lottery and good causes and there is a high risk that this harm will become significant.”

The decision is the latest salvo in one of the most heated contests for the lottery license in its 28-year history. In the lead up to the announcement, Allwyn and Camelot had appointed attorneys in preparation to challenge the outcome.

The premise of Camelot’s challenge is how a “risk factor” was applied to competitors’ bids. In the run-up to the announcement, MPs and rival bidders had questioned whether applying the risk factor, which affected 15% of the candidate’s final mark, would favor the incumbent.

Camelot has since argued that the regulator ruled out the use of the risk factor in the final award due to concerns, allowing Allwyn’s far more ambitious but potentially risky business plan to emerge victorious.

Allwyn had promised far higher returns to good causes despite plans to halve the price of a ticket for the National Lottery main draw.

In its submission to the court, Camelot warned: “Awarding the fourth license to Allwyn would effectively put [Camelot] bankrupt, and CUKL would likely be liquidated in due course.

He added: “The loss of the UK contract will significantly reduce Camelot Group’s ability to bid on and operate international lottery contracts in the years to come.”

A spokesperson for Camelot said: “We have made it clear in our representations to the Court that we believe there is no threat of suspension of the National Lottery in the period between the third and fourth licenses. Camelot has offered a number of possible solutions to the Court – including an interim license which has already been used in similar circumstances – which eliminates any such risk.
