Paul Heckingbottom insists Sheffield United players are “giving their all for the jersey” after claiming Leeds United UK News

United’s demotion back to the Championship could be officially confirmed this weekend, if they lose to Wolves and Newcastle achieves something against West Ham at 12.30pm on Saturday.

And especially in the final weeks of their forgettable season, some Blades fans have turned on their players and accused them of taking down tools early.

But Heckingbottom, who is still seeking his first win in United’s temporary charge after he succeeded Chris Wilder last month, denied that is the case.

When asked if his players were actually playing for their future now, he said: “One hundred percent. Everyone knows it and is aware of it.

“They keep asking me if they are trying; 100 percent they are.

“You just have to look at the physical data. There is only Leeds that has surpassed us in the physical areas: the players are giving everything for the shirt.

“That is not why the results have gone as they have. For some players it could be the last chance to shine in the Premier League, others want to stay at this level.

“So we have to keep reminding them of that.”

United have entered the game in Molineux winless since early March and have lost all five of their games since then. The relegation this weekend would equal the record for the first in Premier League history, tying with Derby County and Huddersfield Town.
