Decisions that cannot be understood are the basis of a culture of fear. Franz Kafka and Hollywood have made masterpieces of paranoid narrative out of it. Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is now moving this tool of bureaucracy to machines. Because this is no longer science fiction, but has long since intervened in the résumés of all citizens in Europe and America, even if they usually do not notice it, the civil rights organization Algorithm Watch came together five years ago in Berlin. This week they published the German edition of their report entitled “Automating Society”, which has been summarizing the automation of society in Europe once a year since 2019.
