It’s a video that ignites social networks and accumulates millions of views: Hold-Up, a critical documentary supposed to demonstrate the lies about Covid-19 spread by the government, the pharmaceutical industry, or the media. A film with many untruths. Some facts are real, but the argument unfolds at least thirty false information. For example, the sentence: “France does not apply WHO recommendations, WHO does not say everyone should put on a mask“.

This is false: the position of the WHO has changed since June. She advises “now to the authorities, to effectively prevent the transmission of Covid-19 (…), to encourage the wearing of masks by the general public“. What is the recipe for the success of the film? It is funded by an online kitty, which has raised nearly 200,000 euros. It uses all the codes of a documentary. Problem: there is no contradiction A trick popular with conspirators, called “argumentative mille-feuille“.
