With the controversy over the closure of non-essential businesses, Amazon has focused all criticism. Elected officials, major brands, traders, the sling is launched. Thursday, November 5, it is Intermarché which continued hostilities with an advertising campaign in the press entitled “Sorry Amazon”, before announcing the opening of its website to small traders who can put their products on sale.
More than ever, the e-commerce platform has become the infrequent brand, the bête noire. And calls to boycott it have multiplied. Up to the highest level elsewhere: since Jean Castex asks the French not to make the American giant prosper, just like Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of the Economy or Roselyne Bachelot, the Minister of Culture for whom: “Amazon is cramming, we must not force-feed Amazon!”
The French make massive use of his services: nearly one in three is an Amazon customer, which represents more than 20 million people! Today, Amazon in France accounts for 20% of French e-commerce, around thirty sites in several regions and nearly 10,000 people on permanent contracts. According to its director in France, who makes the rounds of the media to demonize the brand, if we count the subcontractors and induced jobs, it is even up to 130,000 people who work in France thanks to Amazon.
And it is not over: each year Amazon wants to open in France between five and ten delivery agencies, a huge distribution center … Locally, these projects are controversial. For example, a hundred people demonstrated Thursday against an Amazon establishment near Colmar in the Haut-Rhin.
The group is seen as having little responsibility and king of tax optimization. Last year, Amazon said it paid 420 million euros in taxes in France for 5.5 billion euros in sales. One might think that this is not enough. The working conditions of its employees are also singled out: during the first confinement, Amazon had to close some sites because health measures were not respected enough.
Despite its reputation, Amazon continues to prosper and does not intend to give up its “black Friday”, this Friday of online sales at the end of November. Even if it means making enemies again!
