Svetlana Tikhanovskaya became the face of the Belarusian opposition, she gave birth to the hope of a whole people. In August, she dared to challenge Alexander Lukashenko, in power for 26 years, in the presidential election. Now in exile in Lithuania, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya met France 2 in one of its headquarters, with the same determination to bring down the authoritarian regime of his country.

“My destiny, my mission is to become a transitional president who will lead the country to new elections. I am with my people, I am one of them and we will fight for our freedom”, says the Belarusian opposition leader. The rather reserved 38-year-old mother found herself at the forefront of the protest when her husband, a popular whistleblower, was arrested and jailed. From abroad, she is appealing to Europe: “think about sanctions”, asks the opponent.
