About a year after its presentation, Mercedes-Benz is finally ready to market the EQC, the full electric sister of the GLC. A little SUV, a bit crossover, with a low and dynamic coup style shape, the GLC immediately declares its character with the numbers: 408 hp and 765 Nm of torque delivered by two electric motors, one on each axle, which ensure all-wheel drive.
The electric Mercedes EQC
The optimized front engine for maximum efficiency, the rear one determines the driving dynamics. At the center under the floor, in the safest position in the event of a collision, a generous 80 kWh lithium-ion battery pack consisting of 348 cells, divided into two 48-cell modules and four 72-cell modules, for 625 kg. Despite the EQC declaring 2,495 kg to the scale, the generous power of the engines guarantees a sporty sprint by burning the 0-100 km / h in just 5 “1, while the maximum speed is limited to 180 km / h. Mercedes-Benz declares autonomy between 429 and 454 km in the NEDC cycle. In our test drive, which took place between Milan and La Spezia, after 270 km of road we had a residual autonomy of 32%.
The BEV market (Battery Electric Vehiclein short: electric cars) expanding: if in the world the circulating fleet doubles every 18 months, in Italy the same increase took just one year. The impact of Covid-19 has not slowed down the trend: in Europe in the first half of 2020 there was a 117% growth in the electricity niche, while the market in general was losing – precisely because of the pandemic – 26% . We are still dealing with a small share, 1.7% of the market (9,936 cars) in the first six months of the year, but the result is equivalent to + 97% in 2019.
The German manufacturer has speculated to sell in 2030 50% of highly electrified cars and look to 2039 as a milestone: the year in which they will sell exclusively cars with no carbon or CO2 neutral, with hydrogen electric motors or powered by synthetic fuel. A complete transformation in less than three life cycles: from 2019 to 2039.
476 centimeters long and 162 centimeters high, the EQC is distinguished by the Black Panel front lined with optical fibers and the Multibean LED headlights. The two-color alloy wheels mounted flush with the wheel arches can be 19 or 21 inches depending on the layout (Premium or Sport). The rear lights are also LED. The plate integrated in the bumper, as in the coups. Inside there is space for five people (comfortable) and the load capacity starts from 500 liters. The equipment is very rich, starting with the MBUX multimedia system with intelligent voice commands (they are activated by saying the phrase: Hey Mercedes). To this are added a series of specific EQ contents, such as the display of autonomy, the charge level and the flow of energy.
The BUX system allows you to manage and set also optimized navigation, travel programs, charging current and the time you want to leave. The dashboard with the electric view displays, two 10.25 “each, oriented towards the driver. The copper-colored air vents are impressive.
The EQC has a water-cooled charger as standard, with a power of 7.4 kW, compatible with the alternating current of the home and public stations. Upon purchase, Mercedes-Benz offers the installation of a 3.7 kW domestic wallbox, which seems a bit undersized since it takes 22 hours to fully recharge … Better at least switch to the 7.4 kW one ( costs 200 euros): the time drops to 11 hours. We are still far from the performance of the CCS (Combined Charging Systems) system, present in Europe and the United States, the Japanese CHAdeMO and the Chinese GB / T: in Italy there are just a dozen fast charging systems. With 110 kW columns, the EQC would recharge to 80 percent in about 40 minutes. only a matter of time: once the rapid infrastructure is available, the electricity market will take place.
Drive the new Mercedes crossover a very different experience from what we are used to with, let’s say, traditional cars. The silence, the elasticity of the electrical system, the ever-present torque allow you to travel fast and with pleasant fluidity. The high weight does not disturb: the car is precise in its trajectories, with a contained roll. The presence of Dynamic select allows you to choose between five driving levels, each with its consumption: Comfort, Eco, Max Range, Sport, Individual. The controls behind the steering wheel increase or decrease the intensity of energy recovery through the engine brake, which requires a minimum of addiction.
During the test we also tried the renewed apps Mercedes Me. Thanks to optimized navigation EQ can easily find charging stations and, via Mercedes me Charge, access the charging devices of many suppliers (3,600 in Italy and 130,000 abroad, but they are increasing). Customers can take advantage of a payment function integrated with a simple charge calculation system. The house also offers the Ionity Package: you can buy the electricity at 0.29 cents / kWh, an interesting price if we think that at home the average based on time and supplier of 0.20 cents and 0 , 40 in the public columns of EnelX.
All to power a car high-end sold at 78,800 euros in the EQ 400 4Matic Sport version or 80,500 euros for the more exclusive Premium, 8-year warranty or 160,000 km on batteries included. But as you know, the price can go down a lot by taking advantage of state and regional incentives.
