Many expectations around the new Volkswagen ID.3. Certainly not the first to be electric, but certainly the car destined to bring the MEB modular platform to its debut. Literally the starting point of the new generation of Volkswagen Group electric cars. As futuristic as it may seem, aerodynamic alloy wheels mainly contribute, not the beginning of the four-wheel revolution. So in one way or another the battery-powered car, although still far from a dominant position within the market, a future to which we must get used to.
Volkswagen ID.3: the photos
The ID.3, like the Golf when it comes to more traditional cars, aims to motorize – or perhaps electrify – the new generation of motorists. Today the costs are still high, but with the incentives just put in place, the final price almost tends to halve. Having said that, the new ID.3 has nothing to do with science fiction, offering already known elements in an electrified way. For onboard buttons and buttons are reduced to the minimum terms. Only a small display in front of the driver plays the role of instrument panel, while in the center of the dashboard a touch screen gives access to the entire multimedia section. A little further down, not easy to grasp, the climate control buttons and those that give direct access to driver assistance systems and driving modes. What about the exchange? Given that it is a gearbox, to switch to forward or reverse gear, it is necessary to rotate a lever integral with the small instrument panel. Such a linear choice translates into a more than sufficient number of storage compartments. The large front windows also ensure a lot of brightness in the passenger compartment.
Except for the First Edition, which will be delivered to customers by the end of the year, the real range of ID.3 is gradually developing. First of all, the 58 kWh battery pack of the Pro Performance model (426 km of autonomy) is flanked by the larger 77 kWh battery pack of the Pro S (549 km of travel). While as regards the smaller 45 kWh version of the Pure version (330 km of autonomy), the wait will certainly be longer. Keeping in mind that ID.3 is already orderable, but deliveries are scheduled for the first quarter of 2021. The power systems have different performances during the recharging phase. For example, the 77 kWh pack can be recharged in direct current up to 125 kW, the pack from 58 up to 100 kW. The one that will go from 45 to 50 (100 optional).
On the road it could only be comfortable and silent. A car that prefers relaxed driving, despite the 204 hp rear engine and 310 Nm of driving torque that can guarantee sporty performance. Especially in the sport driving mode the thrust is absolutely felt. But opting for a more aggressive driving style seriously damages the duration of the autonomy. Also because the structure is devoted to comfort, so there is no basis for being truly sporty.
ID.3 follows an alternative route compared to traditional price lists. There are 7 versions, 6 based on the Pro Performance model and one on the Pro S model. The variants, in ascending order, are Life, Business, Family, Style, Tech, Max and Tour (Pro S). Each equipped according to the type of customer, with a whole series of packages that determine a group of accessories. The prices of the individual fittings are 38,900 for the Life, 42,900 for the Business, 42,900 for the Style, 43,900 for the Family, 45,900 for the Tech, 48,200 for the Max and 48,900 euros for the Tour.
