Maranello (Modena) Regarding the production of road cars, Enzo Ferrari said that his company would always produce one car less than what the market asked of him. To keep Cavallini’s desire high and torrid in the restricted world of those who could afford them and feed the dreams and imagination of those who could only look but not touch.
Ferrari Rome: the photos
But this policy it is probably changing. After all, history teaches that, abandoning the dreamlike niches, Porsche has become one of the most profitable car companies in the world without its image being affected much. And, in fact, there are that the 10 thousand Ferraris sold in 2019 (10,131 to be exact), which also set the record in the history of the Emilian factory, go a little tight to a company now listed on the stock exchange.
The real turning point (Lamborghini docet) will arrive between 2021 and 2022 when the Ferrari suv will be presented, as hated by Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, as desired by his successor Sergio Marchionne when they were on the throne of Ferrari. But also the new granturismo Roma goes in the direction of a quantitative increase in the parterre de roi delle Rosse.
After all, the design of the car is truly unusual. Let’s also say that from certain observation points it is difficult to understand at first glance that it is a product made in Maranello. Also because the muzzle, with the grille sculpted and matching the bodywork, really says something new compared to the past. The brand’s fundamentalists – it is officially admitted – were quite shocked by it. But also fascinated, because Rome is a beautiful road object even when it is not immediately identified. But the mix of elegance and aggressiveness, and an overall less shrieked appearance compared to models such as Portofino, F8, 812 and GTC4, will surely bring to Ferrari the interest of an audience other than the usual one.
Even the rear wing, when not needed, it disappears diligently under the rear window, so as not to affect a line with irreproachable fluidity. Except then enter into service above 100 per hour and guarantee an additional load of 95 kg to 250. Let’s also say that Rome does not seem dedicated to those who want a granturismo as long as it is Ferrari, but seeks the consent of those who could also consider a German or English alternative. And in terms of price, it does not rank light years away from the rest of the GT world, given that it is placed at the base of the Ferrari list. Although 200,936 euros on the road are not exactly small change.
The passenger compartment, consistent with the rest, is broken, because it has more modeled and enveloping shapes and an almost opulent, as well as very hi-tech, appearance, given that the virtual and configurable instrument panel similar to that launched by the future SF90 Stradale. Not to mention that, in the rain, there are also a lot of ADAS, such as adaptive cruise control, notice of involuntary abandonment of the roadway, recognition of road signs and so on. Although all this is on request, in order not to confuse those who still have the myth of the hard & pure Ferrari.
In the driver’s seat you are very comfortable and the controls are largely touch, apart from the traditional driving mode manettino which, for the first time on a touring Ferrari, also has the Race position for use on the track. Behind the front seats there are two folding seats, which can accommodate children or, more likely, load more bags than they can fit in the small trunk.
The mechanical base is that of the Portofino spider, for revisited for about 70%. The twin-turbo engine has been upgraded from 600 to 620 hp and the dual-clutch gearbox, also derived from the SF90 Stradale, now has eight gears instead of seven. But although it is a granturismo dedicated to those who also want to travel far and wide, if necessary in relaxation, Rome is very fast, precise and demanding when you take full advantage of it. The highly advanced electronics, starting from the 6 generation Side Slip Control stability management system, always keep everything under control, but when the power reaches the rear driving wheels in large quantities, the tail becomes quite lively, so to speak Rome, like the other Ferraris, must be given too much if you are not completely confident in your driving skills.
Moreover, the declared performances are quite frightening: over 320 km / h of maximum speed, 3.4 seconds to accelerate up to 100 km / h and 9.3 seconds to reach 200. But in a wide range use it guarantees an unusual level of comfort, thanks also to soundproofing remarkable interior, which lets in the characteristic tone of the V8 but retains a good bit of decibel, leaving it above all those who are outside to enjoy it.
