Almost 38% of the service areas of the motorways most traveled by travelers in the summer do not offer adequate protection against the risks of contagion from Covid-19. this is one of the most significant outcomes of the Quattroruote investigation, published in the August issue. A total of 101 service areas that the monthly correspondents visited along the A1 Milan-Naples, A14 Bologna-Bari and A16 Naples-Bari motorways. This year’s survey took particular account of the measures adopted by the managers, both of the refreshment areas and of the refueling points, to combat the risks of contagion from coronavirus. Presence of gel dispensers at the entrance and access of self-service and restrooms, signs on the floor of the positions to be respected to ensure adequate distance between people, use of plexiglass barriers to defend the bar counters, use of devices of protection such as masks and visors from the staff, availability of gels and gloves at the refueling pumps and more.
In this regard, 38 out of 101 areas (equal to 37.6%) were judged insufficient by Quattroruote and many others (38.6%) only achieved sufficiency, or little more. Only two have been promoted with flying colors. In general, the areas managed by Autogrill were those most characterized by attention to prevention, thanks to the installation of protective barriers at bar counters and the frequent use by workers, as well as masks, of protective visors ; at the other extreme, the structures managed by Sarni, in which the gel at the entrance was often not even available and the indications of the positions to be kept emerged as unclear or illegible. The degree of protection guaranteed by other operators, such as Chef Express, My Chef and Ristop, was acceptable, although easily improved.
The investigation, carried out two years after the previous one, it also took into consideration other aspects of the structures, such as the conditions of the toilets and the reception reserved for disabled travelers. The overall opinion has rejected 29.7% of the service areas examined, compared to a single structure deemed worthy of touching the maximum rating (4.5 stars out of 5): this is the Secchia Ovest area on the Autostrada del Sole near Modena, managed by Autogrill, Eataly and Esso. Black jersey instead at the Gargano Ovest service area, on the A14 motorway near Foggia, managed by Sarni and Q8.
