Is an electric car worthwhile? For now, only for about two out of fifteen car owners. the result of a study conducted by the researchers of the MOVE laboratory of the Politecnico di Milano: 13 percent of the owners of a private car could immediately buy an electric car, without changing their habits, balancing costs compared to a petrol cars in less than eight years, thanks to current state incentives on purchase and stamp duty. for the availability of a domestic top-up, as a public top-up network is not yet developed.
The survey analyzed over 100 million private vehicle trips, monitored over a period of 12 months, by crossing the analysis of the distances, an in-depth economic evaluation of the purchase of an electric car and the geographical analysis of the positioning of the house to quantify the probability of actually having a charging point home.
As many as 50% of private vehicles never do, throughout the year, daily journeys of a distance greater than the autonomy of the car battery, assumed in about 300 effective kilometers, thus making it possible to switch to electricity, without any change of habits or limitation of use. indispensable, however, to have a domestic (private or condominium) recharge point available. The study then analyzed in detail this 50% of vehicles functionally ready for a changeover to electricity, through an economic evaluation – purchase costs, energy costs, stamp and insurance costs, devaluation, etc. – of an electric car compared to a petrol equivalent. The result that 20% of the total park could buy an electric car right away, without changing travel habits and only by acquiring a home recharging point, going to equalize the costs at most in 8 years from the purchase, also thanks to today’s incentives.
finally, a geographical positioning analysis was carried out and crossed with the others of the home to quantify the probability of actually having a home charging point. By introducing this constraint, the percentage of the total vehicles in the car fleet ready immediately “for the purchase of an electric car was estimated to be 13%.
Even without waiting for the development of a public charging network, therefore, there is the possibility of accelerating the transition towards electric mobility. Opportunities, underline the researchers of the Polytechnic, which could be further increased by promoting car sharing mechanisms, so as to facilitate the achievement of the economic break-even of the electric car, and therefore the reduction of incentives.
