Worldwide, more and more companies and authorities are using artificial intelligence for facial recognition. Such programs are often unreliable – and prejudiced.
We have lost our face. Literally. To a company by name: Clearview.ai. In February it became known that the tech company, which until then had only thrown funny photo apps on the heap of other funny photo apps, had secretly built up a worldwide database of three billion faces in order to feed a people search engine. The images collected using an automated process come from all major social media sites, especially Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin, Youtube, the usual suspects. It is not unlikely that almost all of the human portraits that can be found on the Internet have been harvested by Clearview.ai and placed in the company’s own data silos.
