“Wear a mask to help prevent the spread of Covid-19”. This is the message that Americans will soon see at the top of their screen when they browse Facebook and Instagram. Initiative taken by the social media giant, Thursday, July 2, while the United States has more than 40,000 new daily infections with the disease for several days. This is an alert for “remind everyone to wear a mask and tell them about other prevention tips via our dedicated information center”.

Making it mandatory to wear a mask is not an easy task in a country where this attribute, or its absence, has often become an eminently political sign. President Donald Trump’s most fervent supporters rarely wear them. The President himself never wears it when the press could see it.

Others invoke their virility, their freedom or even “the respiratory system that God has given us”, as a lady did recently at a Florida municipal hearing. A security guard was even shot for asking a customer to cover his face before entering the store.

But US officials have admitted that they cannot fully control the rebound in the epidemic. At least 52,898 new coronavirus infections have been recorded in the United States in 24 hours, a record level since the start of the pandemic, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday July 1.

The Facebook platform alone is used daily by 1.73 billion people. The recommendation will be distributed first to American users, before being extended more widely around the world.
