Ursula von der Leyen pointed out that the European Commission supports the search for a vaccine and calls for data collection to avoid a second wave of pandemic.

“We will reserve this vaccine for Europeans” But “we are open to also give our aid to poor countries that will not have the means”, announced on Friday June 26 on France Inter Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission.

“We are in negotiations with big pharmaceutical companies to find this vaccine. We will be ready to reserve the capacities for the European population, if ever we find this vaccine”, said Ursula von der Leyen. “We are going to reserve this vaccine for Europeans. But beyond that, we are open to also give our aid to poor countries which will not have the means to also give them access to this vaccine. It is a vocation of the ‘Europe.”

“We have to make sure that we find this vaccine very quickly. As a Commission, we have given our support to research against this virus, in Europe”, in addition to the international conference which mobilized seven billion euros, underlined the president of the European Commission. She recalled in passing that the health field remains within the competence of the Member States, even if Europe supports it.

For Ursula von der Leyen, “We must prepare now to know when to act in the event of a second wave.”

Another aspect of this epidemic in which Europe can have a role is to collect data: “Countries have made different systems to know how many people are infected and how many people have been cured, how this virus spreads. And at that level, we should work together to collect this data”, says Ursula von der Leyen. This could notably help prevent a possible second wave of the epidemic, she said.
