It’s a real continent-wide puzzle. The European Union fails to offer a clear answer when it comes to taking a stand on whether or not to reopen the borders between member countries. “The problem is that internal border management and health are not the skills of the European Union but those of the Member States“, recalls the journalist Valery Lerouge live from Brussels (Belgium).
Recommendations but no obligations
The European Union is still trying to bring order to this border control. “It recommends that border countries with a comparable epidemiological situation quickly reopen their borders. It also offers common criteria for deciding when to reopen, such as the availability of hospital beds. But the 27 governments are free to follow or not these recommendations“, underlines Valery Lerouge.
