Partial unemployment affects more than 11 million workers, and while the state provides it widely, it does not do so blindly. Thus, he refused partial unemployment to Amazon for 10,000 of his employees in France. Employees without activity, not because of confinement, but because of a court decision. It is a real snub for the American giant. Mid-April, French justice deemed Amazon’s measures to protect its employees insufficient during the health crisis. Amazon then closed its warehouses in France, but continues to deliver from abroad.
The unions said claiming partial unemployment was indecent. “Amazon dramatizes its situation, of which it is largely at the origin, even as the activity of Amazon platforms continues”, reacts Laurent Degoussé of the Sud-Commerce union. It is therefore one more episode in the standoff between the state and the leader in online commerce. Amazon’s French sites will remain closed until at least Friday May 8. The reopening procedures are being discussed with the social partners. “The Gafam (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft) are the big winners of the health crisis”, explains Jean-Paul Chapel on set. “These five companies alone are worth 4,830 billion euros on the stock market. This is more than three times the value of the Paris Stock Exchange”, illustrates the journalist.
