The BMW enters the cruiser world and does it with a motorcycle in its own unique way: the R18. Not the first time, those with long memories will certainly remember the R 1200 C (and its derivatives) with which the Germans approached that world in the late 90s, doing it in their own way, but “recycling” in a certain sense the existing technology. It was not a memorable success. Today different: what you see on the R18 all original, all dedicated. Starting from the 1,802 cc boxer engine, capable of 91 hp and a torque of 158 Nm delivered at just 3000 rpm.
Everything about this classic bike and all at the same time made with ultramodern criteria. Steel cradle frame, swingarm reminiscent of Hardtail technology (without shock absorbers, in fact the 90 mm wheel travel) that lovers of the genre like so much, spectacular final “exposed” cardan transmission, fork with rod covers: there are many elements that recall in no uncertain terms the R5 of 1936. The BMW in this case had an easy life fishing in a family heritage that has never been exploited enough. The “big boxer” dominates the scene, an essential, sometimes radical, all-steel motorcycle was built around it. Plastic on the R18 not covered.
The air-cooled engine and has distribution at auctions and rockers, like the old Bmw. But the four-valve distribution. The electronics are very modern: there is also the reverse gear. The shaft of the cardanic transmission turns out in the open as on the R5, but then there are the LED headlights with adaptive technology. The wheels are spoked, but the tires are generous (120 / 70-19 and 180/55 B 16). In short, the cards are in order to conquer a complicated market like that of cruisers. Price: € 22,290 for the “First Edition” version, the only one currently on sale, with specific livery, rich equipment, plus chrome.
