Geneva The Peugeot 208 is Car of the Year 2020: the most important European prize in the sector was awarded behind closed doors, due to the cancellation of the Geneva Motor Show, which was supposed to host the ceremony on the eve of the opening.
With this success, Peugeot reaches Renault in the gold bulletin of the event: six wins. It had already established itself with the 504 in 1969, the 405 in 1988, the 307 in 2002, the 308 in 2014 and the 3008 in 2017. The historical ranking of the prize sees Fiat in first place, with nine successes (the last being dated 2008 with the 500).
The jury of the award is made up of 60 journalists from 23 European countries. The winner is chosen from a shortlist of seven finalists, the result of a first selection out of 60 models and a second out of 35. The 208 scored 281 points, leaving behind the Tesla Model 3 (242) and Porsche Taycan (222). It was from 2010, since the victory of the Volkswagen Polo, that a car of this size did not impose itself.
The ranking continues with: Renault Clio (211 points), Ford Puma (209), Toyota Corolla (152) and Bmw 1 Series (133). The winner was the car most voted by the jurors of Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, but not by the French ones, who preferred the Clio.
The six Italian representatives awarded 208 points to 208, while Tesla and Corolla received 24 points. Puma (23 points), Serie 1 (22), Clio (15) and Taycan (8) followed.
