The Master in Transportation & Automobile design (TAD) of the Politecnico di Milano has just turned ten years old. A decade in which many prototypes have been conceived that prefigure new paths for mobility. The world of cars and mobility are undergoing a phase of great transformations. We are only at the beginning of a series of epochal changes, with themes dominating the development of new sources of propulsion and the reduction of emissions. At the same time, new contingent situations linked to sudden climate changes and the need to deal with various critical situations leave room for the creation of vehicles that can transform and adapt to multiple uses. Just think of amphibious cars or new prototypes able to get up in flight. Several other means, on the other hand, are specifically designed for use in the social or medical field: for example to allow the mobility of people with walking difficulties.
We study models intended for use only in certain places, for example in a purely metropolitan scenario, where we find four-wheel modular cars convertible into two-wheel commuter. We are moving towards hyper-specialization and the creation of completely new market segments.
The tenth edition of the TAD Master, that of 2019, took place under an agreement with Volkswagen Group. Today there is no longer a single automotive partner of reference, but several collaborations, with a view to expanding the possibility of job opportunities for students. The concepts of the X Edition of the TAD Master have been designed to project society into a very distant future. The students started four projects imagining borderline situations. A future in which water and earth will be practicable without discontinuity (the project called Anuri) and in which urban space will be increasingly limited and precious (Crisalis). Cities where shared solutions that favor aggregation (VIZZi) or in which the transformism of men and means could become the most effective life solution (Kimera) could assert themselves.
Let’s briefly look at the features of these concepts. Starting from Anuri. The likely rise in sea level caused by global warming will redesign the urban fabric of coastal cities. Anuri an amphibious vehicle designed to provide, in the near future, a premium sharing service in cities where the mixture of water and land will become a characteristic feature of the new urban fabric. Crisalis. In the future, the need to optimize the use of urban spaces will be increasingly pressing, by virtue of the growing number of machines in circulation: in this sense, sharing services will represent a sort of social need. For many users, however, the desire for a private, exclusive and non-shared space will continue to represent an essential component of their mobility. withered. In the future, traffic in the city center will only be allowed for public transport or sharing services. The drastic reduction of private vehicles will free up the spaces now used for parking and allow the creation of lanes dedicated to specific services. Volkswagen VIZZi is a modular product-service designed for this context. Kimera. 2040: smart cities will be a widespread reality and all aspects of life will be regulated by artificial intelligence. Kimera was created for those who want to enjoy an escape into nature, free from the control of the machines.
The TAD Master’s projects ended in 2018instead, they represent different visions on the theme 4 Distances: new e-form languages for future distances, to be realized assuming models with the Audi brand. Three projects, in particular, addressed the issues of mobility of elderly people or those with physical problems and of those who spend most of their time in the car, for work reasons. In all three cases, these concepts offer solutions aimed at improving the quality of life of those who use them. Audi Jewl.in a 2 + 2 car, also designed to facilitate the mobility of people of old age, who want to continue to have a particularly active life. designed to carry two adults on the rear seats, facilitating access, and two children on the front ones. Audi_IN represents a very particular concept, intended to overcome mobility limits. He wants to allow people forced to move in a wheelchair to move independently. Audi_IN, allows you to house the wheelchair directly on board, where it becomes the driver’s seat, avoiding any movement of the person. This project was presented on the occasion of the Global Grad Show in Dubai 2019, the event dedicated to the most innovative solutions created by students of the main design schools in the world.
Audi MIA a car designed for those who spend a lot of their life in the car, obviously for work reasons. This vehicle creates a new concept that goes beyond the normal perception of what an automobile is or should be. Audi MIA is a mobile personal assistant, where the passenger compartment, the extension of the passenger’s living space and the seats have different configuration possibilities.
The eighth edition of the TAD Master, in 2017, it developed shapes from Eco-Dynamic Cars: focusing on the growing importance of aerodynamics, for the creation of cars functional to principles of eco-sustainability. The most innovative project is the one called Audi Trier. Audi Trier a compact 2-seater car, designed to combine the driving agility of a small city car with the interior comfort of a luxury sedan. The volumes and surface treatments are inspired by the design of the boats and each line designed to decrease the air resistance. At the same time, the search for extreme lightness and agility has led to the choice of low density recyclable materials.
The theme of the 2016 TAD Master has focused on the problems of congested traffic, inside and outside the big cities: Autonomous Guide Cars for Inner & Inter City Connections. Among the projects presented, 4senses undoubtedly stands out, a concept car designed for a particular category of users: blind and partially sighted people. 4senses a self-guided concept car, designed for a particular category of users: blind and partially sighted. For this reason, every design solution created to make traveling by car comfortable and safe. We all know that these people have the other four senses more developed than normal: for this reason, sensory experiences accompany the passenger through the city and its most characteristic symbolic places. The TAD Master ended with the summer session in 2015, has set different thesis objectives, related to exclusivity and uniqueness. Among the projects presented, we highlight Audi e-Twin (versatile mini-car / electric city studio, two-seater in line). Audi e-twin. The idea behind e-twin is to design a self-driving car for Milan, thinking that inside it could be possible to relax and recover energy. The inspiration comes from the culture of the Zen garden with the force of calm. Let’s not go further, still back in time, but let’s briefly retrace the history of the first ten years of the TAD Master.
The first two editions, starting in 2009, saw the collaboration with the then Fiat Group. Very defined and contemporary design themes such as theAlfa Romeo Ascari, hypothesis of Alfa Romeo spider to imagine marketed in 2012, and the Maserati B.Effect, a reinterpretation of GranTurismo, imagining it as a new model to be presented in 2020. Other editions have developed more abstract concepts, but the future of mobility has always been well present and already the third edition, the first in collaboration with the Volkswagen group, has had as The theme of electric mobility applied to different types of public services for the city of Milan, such as on the occasion of Expo: Moving Milano: Urban Mobility Culture Associated with Expo 2015. Electric vehicles have been at the center of planning over the years , sometimes directly (as well as in the third, also in the fifth and ninth editions), other times indirectly and implicitly (as in the seventh edition whose theme was that of self-driving vehicles).
The Master in Transportation and Automobile Design trains designers able to develop their creativity through the entire process typical of style centers: from the definition of external forms to the development of the interior; study and choice of materials and colors; physical modeling with clay and digital. The training course, directed by Professor Fausto Brevi, with a limited number for a maximum of 20 students: is aimed at holders of degrees belonging to the disciplines of the project (engineering, architecture, industrial design). On average, within 18 months from the end of the Master, 80% of students find employment in their area of expertise.
